REVIEW

I have been waiting to watch this movie since the day it released and finally it happened. Mohanlal is one of my favorite actors in Malayalam cinema. He is called The Complete Actor for a reason. While actors of his age are struggling to find the right script and give a hit film, Mohanlal has been redefining his position in the industry with every film. But as usual, no movie is perfect. So let me talk about the negatives of the movie first.

There is not enough scope for Tollywood actor Jagapathi Babu to showcase his acting skills in the film. He plays a regular villain, who provokes the humble hero only to be killed at his hands soon. Pulimurugan also marks his debut in Malayalam film. Dubbing his voice is a major flaw for me as you can't take him seriously without his actual voice. Neil Nitin Mukesh learned Tamil for his role in Kaththi movie, as he did not want to speak his dialogues without understanding their meaning. It would have fantastic if Jagapathi Babu learned Malayalam for his role or at bare minimum learned enough to speak the dialogues in his own voice instead of the deep voiced bear guy dubbing him. This is a tragic waste of Jagapathi Babu as a villain as he is a guy who can do a villain role exceptionally well if he was given the chance. Unfortunately, he was a wasted effort here.

That is the only negative I found in this movie. Rest of the cast did alright. Kamalinee Mukherjee has done justice to her role as a grumpy and nagging housewife. Lal, who plays Pulimurugan’s uncle, is impressive. Besides providing emotional and moral support to Pulimurugan, he also brings comic relief in the film. The film’s screenplay, which is also the first independent work of Udayakrishna of Udaykrishna-Sibi K Thomas duo is tight and engaging. The background music by Gopi Sundar enhances the cinematic experience, especially in the scenes involving tigers. The breathtaking visuals captured by cinematographer Shaji Kumar are a plus for the film.

The CGI Tiger is great to look at. In India filming tiger for movies is prohibited. So the filmmakers had to heavily depend upon various foreign shooting locations and CGI visual graphics for creating tiger in the movie. Hence I was a bit worried about the CGI Tiger but it's actually good CGI. The fight between the Tiger and Mohanlal was one of the best moments in this movie. I was actually waiting for the Tiger to show up again as it was absent for a good chunk of the movie. I know the reason is to build the main protagonist's character and it has done that very well. I just missed the Tiger and was happy to see it in the climax. The tiger hunting scenes are brilliantly done and are the best part of this action-thriller. A lot of research and effort have clearly gone into making these scenes and the results outstanding. The high-voltage action is another highlight of the film.

In conclusion, Pulimurugan has lived up to all the expectations. I really liked how they executed certain scenes and the fight between Tiger and Mohanlal was awesome and will not leave you disappointed. Mohanlal acted in this action movie at the age of 55 without using a dupe and this made me like him more as some of those stunts are very difficult to do for an average person. He uses his skills to his full advantage that even Action director Peter Hein was impressed with him. He originally planned a 6 months stunt workshop for the actor Mohanlal. But after watching Mohalal's stunt performance, he was amazed and ended the workshop in 3 hours. He truly is The Complete Actor. If you haven't got a chance to watch this movie yet, then don't miss another second and watch it wholeheartedly. Enjoy the hunt!
