REVIEW

Before I dive into the story, I would like to talk about the performance of the characters in the movie. Let’s start with the main protagonists, Manchu Manoj and Regina Cassandra.

Manchu Manoj and Regina Cassandra have really under-played their roles. Both of them have similar characteristics and they provide the thrill and mystery to the movie, but they both fall victim to the repetition. After the first 2 or 3 scenes, they still try to hammer us in the head that “They are good people doing good deeds”. I understand that that is the reason for her to fall in love with him but we already got that in their first interaction. None of them do anything different and a lot of their dialogues are uttered in such a way that it appears as though they are in a hurry and wanted to finish this scene as soon as possible. Both of them failed to show any kind of passion towards their work. Their comedy is weak as well as their interaction. They had low energy essentially making the movie boring to sit through.

Manoj does give an amazing performance during the thriller scenes. However, it was not enough to save the movie and since both of them were the main cast, the movie suffered a lot because of it.

Prabhas Srinu and Brahmanandam are the two comic roles in the movie. Brahmanandam comedy fails in every scene. He is one of the best comedian Telugu film has got and yet they fail to use him properly. He couldn’t evoke a single laughter out of me. Fucking fail! Please use him properly, Telugu cinema. It is a request.

Prabhas Srinu is the main addition. He does try to evoke laughter and some of the scenes do work. But his character itself felt unnecessary. He felt more like a filler character that gave me few chuckles now and then. But he does nothing to impact the story in any way.

Prakash Raj is another disappointment in the movie. He plays the police officer investigating the murder. I’m sorry if this offends any of you but his performance was very underwhelming. His role in this movie was somewhat similar to his role in Arjun where he was not able to act to his full potential. Watch his great performances in Singam and Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu movie, then you’ll know I’m talking about. This was not one of his best performances which was very disappointing for me because he is one of my favorite actors. His acting is pure gold but in this movie, he was average at best.

Now that I got the performance aside, what about the story? The story is actually pretty great. It’s not a masterpiece but I wasn’t expecting that. The first half gets boring but once we enter the murder part of the story, it does get interesting. The investigation, how she was killed, did Manoj really kill her, the climatic twist, everything was executed very well. I really enjoyed it after tolerating the boring first few minutes. However, they do fuck it up as well. The mystery was not executed well. The reason for that being they revealed who the villains are in the first half of the story. That is a very big drawback while executing a mystery thriller. A mystery works when the investigation reveals more about the suspects than what they actually show us. You try to hide the killer till the climax so that we, the viewers, can also deduct who the killer could be with whatever data the movie presents us with. But in Shourya, it’s all backwards. They get the Romance | Thriller part right but they fail to create a good mystery.

The songs are fantastic. The song transitions are nicely executed. The songs felt like a cool breeze. It was very good to listen to. I still listen to it every now and then. I would like to thank all the crew who worked on the songs. Do continue to provide us with good songs like these and keep up the good work.

In conclusion, it’s both a good movie and a bad movie. After watching the movie in its entirety, I can only say it’s average. They did do a lot of things correctly and the execution of the scenes were great but they did fail to set up an engaging atmosphere and even the performance felt pale and underwhelming. But the overall experience isn’t all that bad. I’m glad that I watched it so I would recommend it for everyone who wants an average yet good thriller. It executes the thriller scenes well and the songs are a delight to listen to. I would gladly watch this movie again but I can’t deny that that the performance of main and supporting cast, the first half, and the below average execution of the mystery element do end up hurting the movie.  But it's really worth a watch and I do recommend it.
